Like any 18-year-old on his last day of school, Prince Harry appeared to have moments of sheer jubilation as he prepared to leave Eton on Thursday. His famous lively spirit came to the fore as he turned to photographers, threw his hands in the air and exclaimed: "At last!".

The young royal looked thrilled as he loaded a waiting people carrier, ferrying his belongings in a black plastic bag and bulging shoulder bag. There was a poignant moment, however, as he said goodbye to his housemaster Dr Andrew Gailey, who has been considered one of Harry's closest confidantes since he came to Eton aged 13.

And as Harry packed up on the final day of his school career, St James's Palace revealed what the future holds for the teenage prince. A spokesperson revealed Prince Charles's younger son – who excelled in Eton's Combined Cadet Force, rising to the top rank of commander – will be applying to Sandhurst.

Now the Prince, who is embarking on a gap year, is awaiting the results of his A-levels in geography and art. He needs to pass both in order to be accepted into the military academy.
