The people of Belgium took to two wheels at the weekend as King Albert celebrated ten years of his reign. The 69-year-old monarch was pictured astride a motorcycle just before a bikers' parade kick-started the anniversary celebrations. And his son, Prince Philippe, was also back in the saddle, as he led a bicycle parade past the Royal Palace.
Thousands of well-wishers turned out to join the celebrations and offer congratulations to their king. Since his accession, Albert has become very popular with the people of Belgium, largely thanks to his easygoing approach.
He originally came to power when his brother Baudouin, who had become known as "the sad king", died without any children. At the time it was feared the resulting vacuum might lead to the break up of the country, as regional tensions were running high.
Albert managed to bring about a détente, however, by accepting greater devolution of power to the regions. It was not the only challenge he has faced during his time on the throne, as the former Naval officer has also overcome difficulties in his family life. In 1999 he admitted his marriage almost collapsed amid revelations he had an illegitimate daughter in London.
Their past troubles were all but forgotten, however, as King Albert and Queen Paola were joined by their children Philippe and Mathilde for the celebrations at Laeken Royal Castle.
