A 77-year-old great-grandmother surprised Camilla Parker Bowles with an impromptu gesture on Wednesday, giving her a heartfelt kiss on the hand.
As Prince Charles and Camilla chatted with well-wishers at the 122nd Sandringham Flower Show on the Queen's Norfolk estate, septuagenarian Dorothy Edwards ducked under a rope cordon to personally greet the Prince and his companion.
After meeting Charles – "I was so excited that I cannot remember what he said," she recalled later – the great-grandmother approached Mrs Parker Bowles. "I got really carried away and kissed her hand three times," said Mrs Edwards. "It just seemed like the thing to do because she seemed such a nice person.
"I told her she smelt beautiful, as if she had just come out of a shower. She replied, 'Oh, thank you, my dear'." The Prince's companion seemed delighted by the spontaneous show of affection, smiling broadly while clutching flowers in her free hand.
Mrs Edwards, who was accompanied by her 74-year-old husband Fred to the event, gave the couple her seal of approval. "I honestly think that Camilla is very good for Charles. They can't be too outgoing in public, but you can see there is definitely a chemistry between them," she said, later adding: "I think they look lovely together."
