The Wessexes' new baby is already building a collection of cuddly toys, after Prince Edward hosted a charity reception in Buckingham Palace.

The 39-year-old prince, whose first child was born at the weekend, played host to children and workers from the brain injuries charity Brainwave. His wife Sophie, who is president of the organisation, was unable to attend as she is still recovering from the delivery of their new baby.

"If you're wondering why I'm standing up here, I don't know which planet you've been on," joked the proud father. "Sophie asked me to stand in for her, which I can do from time to time, but I don't agree to wear the dress."

One person who was clearly well aware of the Earl's new arrival was young cerebral palsy sufferer Natalie Preston. The 14-year-old, who has learned to walk at Brainwave's national centre in Somerset, presented him with a teddy bear for his little girl.

Prince Edward also told his guests that his wife was "adamant" the event should go ahead, despite the fact that she is still in hospital.

Buckingham Palace has reported that both Sophie and the baby are making good progress after undergoing an emergency Caesarean at the weekend. The infant is being cared for at a specialised neo-natal unit in London, while her mum is under observation at Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey. The pair are expected to be reunited this weekend, when Sophie is discharged.
