The Duchess of York and her daughters Beatrice and Eugenie have been enjoying some snowy fun in the mountains of Switzerland. The royal trio took to the slopes of Verbier in the Alps to get away from it all with a few days skiing.

It was Eugenie's first outing on the piste since her back operation to correct a curvature of the spine in October 2002.

But for Beatrice it was the second skiing trip in as many weeks, as she recently hit the runs of Flaine in France. The 15-year-old, who is already rather accomplished on the pistes, competed in a two-day competition for her school St George's. And although she wasn't among the winners, onlookers noticed that she handled the event's twists and turns with ease.

The young princess also proved her mettle when two of her companions ambushed her with snowballs. Never one to take a pasting lying down, Beatrice launched a swift counter attack, much to the amusement of her pals.

It has also been reported that her mum is eager to expand their happy family. According to newspaper reports, Fergie wants to adopt a child and intends to ask the Queen's permission as a matter of courtesy. A spokesman for Buckingham Palace has meanwhile confirmed that, as she is divorced from Prince Andrew, the Duchess does not actually need approval. "She does not need to ask permission to have another child," he said. "It is her personal choice."
