The Prince of Wales is demanding that the Army take over from the police in guarding royal residences after yet another breach of security.
His request came after a member of the organisation Fathers 4 Justice managed to scale a ladder alongside Buckingham Palace's main balcony last weekend. It is the third such serious breach in 18 months.
According to reports Prince Charles is increasingly concerned that the royal protection squad, which was set up after an intruder managed to make his way into the Queen's bedroom in 1982, has grown complacent.
The Queen, who watched the Buckingham Palace balcony incident on television at Balmoral, is understood to be deeply concerned by this latest intrusion.
Handing over the royal security detail to the military is not a new idea. It had already been mooted by Commander Frank Armstrong, third in command at the City of London Police. Armstrong is the man responsible for the investigation into an earlier incident in which a comedian dressed as Osama bin Laden gatecrashed Prince William's 21st birthday celebrations last year.
To date, however, these proposals have not yet been implemented.
