Norwegian royals bid fond farewell to Britain

The Norwegian royal family's three-day visit to the UK came to an end on Thursday when Crown Prince Haakon and his wife Mette-Marit met up with the Queen and Prince Philip for an unveiling ceremony in London.

King Harald also went along to the Norwegian ambassador's residence to see the new statue of his grandmother, Queen Maud. Both families seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the get-together, joking and chatting warmly among themselves as the press snapped their photos. The two queens might have been forgiven for feeling a little disconcerted upon their arrival, as they were wearing strikingly similar turquoise outfits, but that did nothing to put a damper on proceedings.

It was the heavily pregnant Mette-Marit who provoked the most attention, with both reporters and fellow guests eager to find out how she was feeling. The pretty 32-year-old, who was looking characteristically elegant in a deep purple ensemble with a matching hat, took everything in her stride, though. Indeed the mum-to-be managed to charm both the Duke of Edinburgh and his wife when she curtseyed before them on the red carpet.

Later in the day, the Windsors said their final farewells aboard their Scandinavian guests' yacht, The Norge. The waterborne soiree marked the end of the Norwegian family's official visit to the UK, which was staged to mark the centenary of their homeland's independence.
