Announcing a decision to marry is perhaps the most romantic gesture a man could make on Valentine's Day. And just as Prince Charles had hoped to share his wedding plans with the world on February 14 last year - an intention scotched by a press leak - there is speculation that Prince William may soon follow suit by making public his wish to tie the knot with long-term love Kate Middleton.
A report in last weekend's Sunday Mirror newspaper indicated the young royal is expected to propose shortly. Talk of a protection officer for the pretty 24-year-old - a step usually only undertaken after an engagement is announced - has further fuelled speculation among royal watchers.
Wills and his girlfriend of two years have also recently been photographed smooching openly during a pre-Sandhurst skiing holiday. The public embrace was a definite first, as the Windsors are not known for effusive displays of affection, and the Prince was obviously keen to underline Kate's importance to his happiness.
Having been unable to leave base to see his love during the first intensive phase of his training at the tough military academy, the dashing royal is reportedly keen to make it up to her by whisking her off to his remote cottage in Scotland.
Opinions on such an early match vary. Kate's supporters regard her as a positive influence on the Prince, and a woman who would make a first-rate consort to the future king. Others point to their relative youth and question the advisability of such a big step at this stage.
