Rumours of royal romance in Denmark have been confirmed after Prince Joachim openly declared his love for French girlfriend Marie Cavallier. Newspapers in the Scandinavian country have been closely following the pair's involvement, but until now they have not made any public statement about their relationship.
The couple's decision to give a newspaper interview is being taken as a clear sign that their union is getting serious. The couple first met two years ago, but Cupid didn't strike until last autumn, a few months after Joachim's divorce from Princess Alexandra became final.
Marie, who originally hails from Paris, has lived in Geneva with her four brothers for most of her life. The 30-year-old, who has also lived in Boston and New York, works in the Swiss city's booming finance sector.
"Prince Joachim is a wonderful person," said the pretty brunette. "He's so warm, sweet and very affectionate. He's been through a very hard period and dealt with a lot of difficult things, but he's also a very patient and honest person. I love him very much."
Her royal beau was equally forthcoming when asked about his feelings for the new squeeze in his life. "I am a very happy man," he revealed. "If I'm radiating joy, that's why and I'm not complaining."
As to whether Denmark's five million citizens might have another royal wedding to look forward to, the brown-eyed beauty made a coy reference to Shackenborg Palace, where Joachim lives. "That's a big palace for one man all by himself – but let's see what the future brings," she said.
