Now a seasoned performer on the national eventing scene, Zara Phillips was concealing any nerves she might have felt on the first day of the Badminton Horse Trials. The pretty royal was in good spirits as she prepared for the event at the home of the Duke of Beaufort in Gloucester.
The Queen's granddaughter faces a weekend of competition, which will demand fitness, discipline and courage from both her and her horse. The Badminton meeting is a crucial part of the build-up to the Beijing Olympics, in which the talented equestrian hopes to represent her country.
During the Gloucestershire trials Zara is being cheered on by her rugby ace boyfriend Mike Tindall, who is a regular fixture whenever she rides. Although the couple have been constant companions for the last three years, Mike doesn't always have the 24-year-old royal's undivided attention.
Much of Zara's time and affection is dedicated to her mount Toytown. "He's the biggest spoilt brat in the world," she comments indulgently. "He stomps for attention and kisses and cuddles. He can be quite sharp, but we have a good relationship."
