A pub lunch fit for a Queen

The Queen must have the finest chefs in the land working for her at Buckingham Palace, but she got to enjoy a completely different culinary experience when she went for her first ever pub lunch on Thursday.

Her visit came during a whistlestop tour of Lancashire with Prince Philip. Wearing a smart emerald coat and hat, Queen Elizabeth popped into The Inn At Whitewell, a 14th-century pub set in three acres of grounds, which also acts as the village local.

Here the royal couple sat down to a meal of cottage pie, apple crumble and Lancashire cheese along with 50 VIPs. Although the establishment serves a fine Copper Dragon ale, it's not known if the 80-year-old monarch enjoyed a pint.

Earlier in the day on a walkabout round the village of Dunsop Bridge in the Ribble Valley, the Queen also visited Puddleducks Cafe, where staff let her into the secret of their recipe for scones.

In the past the country lover has said that if she and Prince Philip had a chance to retire, they would settle in the valley. And judging by the enthusiastic reception she received from residents who pressed bouquets and belated birthday cards on her throughout the day, the Queen would certainly be welcomed with gusto to life in this quiet spot.
