Prince Andrew and his younger brother Prince Edward were surrounded by their friends and loved-ones when they became Knights of the Garter on Monday. The Royal Family was out in force to see the two men, who were both dressed in spectacular ceremonial robes and feathered hats, receive Britain's highest order of chivalry.
Prince Charles, Princess Anne and the Countess of Wessex were all among the congregation gathered in the chapel of Windsor Castle, along with the Duke of York's daughters Beatrice and Eugenie and, of course, the Queen. Perhaps the most notable guest at the service, however, was Andrew's former wife Sarah, who received a special invitation from the sovereign.
Her presence at the event is being taken as a sign of improving relations between the Duchess and Her Majesty. Since her divorce from the Prince ten years ago, Sarah has only attended two formal royal ceremonies - the funerals of Princess Diana and the Queen Mother.
According to newspaper reports her ex-husband was adamant she should be among the guests for Monday's investiture, though, and his mother was apparently amenable to extending the olive branch. The flame-haired Duchess has also taken tea with the sovereign on several occasions, most recently at the Guards Polo Club last Sunday.
Sarah has always maintained close relations with her ex, so it was fitting she be in attendance for his moment of glory. Appointments to the Order of the Garter, which was founded by Edward III in 1348, are made by Queen without advice from government officials.
