Swedish royals rev up for afternoon of old-fashioned fun

Sweden's King Carl Gustaf is known as one of Europe's most forward-thinking and modern royals but he obviously hasn't lost his taste for the old-fashioned. The 60-year-old got behind the wheel of an antique runabout when he helped kick off the Veteran Cars Rally in Borghold this week.

The sovereign was photographed arriving with his wife Queen Silvia in a well-preserved Volvo that, having been manufactured in 1946, had been around for just as long as its driver. And a certain vintage wasn't the only thing the shiny vehicle had in common with the head of state as they were both clearly in tip-top condition as well.

Carl Gustav proved his motor was still running smoothly by throwing footballs from behind a barrier in one of the fairground games that had been set up for the event. And he also took part in an unusual egg and spoon race that involved driving one of the venerable old vehicles while holding a spoon complete with a delicately balanced golf ball in his mouth.

Looking dapper with a white hat and red bowtie to offset his light grey suit, the king was also keen to check out some of the other cars that had been brought along to the rally. Queen Silvia, who was sporting a simple lilac dress with white lapels, was meanwhile photographed chatting with some of the younger royal fans who made it along.
