Hats off to royal style as Ascot gets underway

As usual, eye-popping headgear was order of the day among racing fans, and the members of the Windsor family weren't about to be left out. Sophie managed to make the biggest impression, with a fabulous Philip Treacy creation featuring an oversize pink flower.

Her sister-in-law Camilla likewise turned to the Irish maestro for her striking feathered number, which got a resounding thumbs up from the fashion police. Her Majesty meanwhile opted for a rather more sedate ensemble, teaming an understated Philip Somerville hat with her royal blue coat.

Statuesque model Jodie Kidd towered over former jockey Willy Carson as they stood chatting at the side of the course, but the 6ft 1in beauty proved herself quite capable of making a smaller style statement with a miniature top hat by Londoner Cozmo Jenks.

Had there been a prize for the most amazing design, however, it would surely have gone to 26-year-old Georgina Taylor, who was sporting a scaled-down model of the course's much talked-about new grandstand. The facility has recently been completed as part of a £200-million makeover which has made Ascot the most modern racecourse in Europe.
