Heading back to school after the summer break isn't a day most children look forward to, but Princess Elisabeth and Prince Gabriel of Belgium didn't seem too bothered as they arrived at Sint-Jan Berchmanscollege in Brussels for the first day of term. The two youngsters received a loving escort from their parents, Crown Prince Philippe and Crown Princess Mathilde, as they began the new academic year.

School will be a whole new world for little Gabriel who, at the age of three, is just beginning his education, but the youngster can count on plenty of support from his older sister who is something of an old hand by comparison. Five-year-old Elisabeth took her younger sibling's hand as they made their entrance at the institution on Friday morning.

A classroom full of students must have seemed rather hectic after the tranquillity of the holidays, but there was surely fun to be had as well. And there was plenty of activity in the Royal Palace over the weekend, too, as Mathilde and Philippe invited some 600 people involved in social work to their home in a show of support for their worthy efforts.
