Prince William seemed more than delighted as he met some of Santa's prettier helpers this week while visiting a trading floor in the City.

The handsome royal was invited to attend the office's fancy dress day in aid of the wildlife group Tusk Trust, of which he is patron. "You look awesome," the 24-year-old told a line-up of girls in mini Santa outfits and fairy wings.

He also delighted the assembled business crowd by trying his hand at throwing darts.

Thursday's outing came as it was revealed that the Army cadet has been beaten to the top honour at Sandhurst military training academy. William, who was one of seven on the short list for the award, lost out to 24-year-old fellow cadet Angela Laycock. And it will be Angela who'll carry the Sword of Honour during the group's passing-out parade in front of the Queen next Friday. It is only the third time a woman has won the ceremonial blade.

And it wasn't just William getting in the festive mood. His father met up with the protagonist of the season - Santa - at St James's Palace, where he checked that the burly figure in red was the real deal by giving a tug on his beard. The Prince was joined by Camilla at the reception for veteran soldiers in aid of The Not Forgotten Association.
