After the palace announced the engagement between Prince Joachim and his fiancée Marie Cavallier, the world had to wait in anticipation for a glimpse of the ring. The opportunity came at a press conference later on the same day, when Marie, glowing with happiness after announcing the happy news, showed off the unique tricolour affair now adorning her left hand.
In a nod to the future princess' French heritage, the ruby, diamond and sapphire sparkler is made up of the colours of her home country's flag. The handsome prince romantically went down on one knee to propose whilst the couple were on holiday in Turkey this summer, after having bought the stunning ring in France. He had a few minor design modifications made before presenting it to Marie. "It was a complete surprise to me," she says of her royal beau's choice of jewellery.
Later in the day, the betrothed couple posed in an official family photo, and were joined by Prince Joachim's sons, five-year-old Felix and eight-year-old Nikolai. The boys, who are said to be extremely fond of their father's pretty fiancée, had been keeping the upcoming nuptials a secret after they were let in on the happy news before the rest of the world.
The royal couple are set to marry next spring, when the 31-year-old Frenchwoman will become a Danish citizen and swap her Roman Catholic faith to become a member of the Lutheran Church of Denmark. After the ceremony, she will gain royal status and be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Marie.
