It's an unfortunate condition to have if your boyfriend, and the majority of his family, are passionate equestrians. But it has emerged that Prince William's girlfriend Kate Middleton is allergic to horses.

Although during the season she's a regular fixture on the fringes of polo fields where her royal love is playing, the elegant brunette made the confession at a society match last year.

Australian author Kathy Lette says she came across the 27-year-old alone and watching intently as her royal beau participated in a game. When the writer asked if Kate would be joining a champagne reception taking place in a marquee next door, Kate replied: "I've got to pay attention to every second. I'll be discussing the game in minute detail later on."

And when Kate was asked why she didn't play polo herself, the royal girlfriend replied: "I'm allergic to horses."

The story, which is recounted in the current edition of Reader's Digest, may come as a surprise to royal watchers, who are used to seeing Kate cheering on Wills and his brother Harry at equestrian events. The revelation also puts paid to reports she rides with the Queen at Windsor.
