Prince Philip takes up reins again having recovered from back injury

One month after injuring his back carriage driving on the Sandringham estate, Prince Philip returned to the sport this week, taking a spin around the grounds of Windsor Castle.

Wearing a flat cap and gloves, the Queen's 87-year-old husband showed no signs of discomfort as, accompanied by a female groom, he took the reins of the two-horse carriage on Monday.

The outing, his first in a carriage since he strained muscles in his back, is not the only sign the Duke of Edinburgh – who took up carriage driving as a "geriatric sport" after retiring from polo in 1971 – is on the mend.

After missing a series of engagements while he recovered, the Prince fulfilled his first public duty since Christmas earlier this month. He also attended the unveiling ceremony for a statue of the Queen Mother on Tuesday.
