French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife had kept mum about their plans for the weekend, but after Carla let the cat out of the bag at a charity event on Thursday, saying they were flying to Mexico, there had been speculation as to where the first couple would be staying.
It transpires the answer was a luxurious beach-front villa in a picturesque nature reserve on Mexico's south-eastern Pacific Coast.
The one-bedroom accommodation at the El Tamarindo Beach and Golf Resort certainly features extras fit for a king – or a head of state – including a private pool and an outdoor Jacuzzi.
Owned by a multi-millionaire friend of Mexico's President Calderon, the villa also comes with its own butler, cook and maid, reports the Daily Telegraph.
The overall cost of the weekend - which came ahead of Mr Sarkozy's one-day state visit to Mexico on Monday – is believed to be £45,000, sparking controversy in France.
