In the early hours of Monday morning Princess Marie of Denmark and her husband Prince Joachim welcomed their first child together, a son.

The new baby – seventh-in-line to the Danish throne – weighed in at 6.67lbs and measured 19.6in. Prince Joachim, who is already a father to nine-year-old Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix, six, from his first marriage to Hong Kong-born Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg, was present throughout the birth and cut the umbilical cord, as he did with his other sons.

The 39-year-old didn't announce the name of the new arrival, as was the case with his two elder sons just after their birth. In line with Danish tradition the name of the latest addition to the family will be revealed at his christening.

Proud Joachim admitted to shedding a tear as his new son entered the world, telling press at the University Hospital of Copenhagen: "It's a great and moving feeling to experience a new life come about."

"He is a little smaller than me and looks just as new-born male children do. We can wonder from here to eternity who he resembles, but he resembles himself," the smiling father said when asked which of the happy parents his new baby looks like.

Thirty-three-year-old Marie and Joachim, who wed on May 24 last year, knew in advance they were expecting a son. The newborn is the fifth grandchild of Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik joining half-brothers Nikolai and Felix as well as Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary's two children, Christian, three, and two-year-old Isabella.
