Radiant first-time mum Princess Marie presents her newborn son

Balloons and flags bobbed cheerfully over the entrance to a Copenhagen hospital as Denmark's newest little prince was presented to the public by his overjoyed parents Princess Marie and her husband Prince Joachim.

Cradled in his mother's arms, the tiny royal - who's seventh in line to the throne - snoozed peacefully through the photocall. His little fist curled up against his cheek, he remained blissfully unaware of all the excitement his arrival has generated.

A wisp of dark hair was just visible under the blue woollen wrap in which he was presented to the world just before 1pm on Thursday.

Most of the attention was naturally focused on the little cutie, but onlookers were obviously anxious to know how Marie, a first-time mum, was feeling.

While the French-born royal waved happily to the crowd she seemed a little hesitant about answering questions in Danish, which she's been learning since her wedding last summer.

She did say, though, that her son's name is a secret for the moment and that he will be bilingual.

Her proud husband Joachim - father to two boys from his previous marriage - then stepped in, telling reporters "you can see a mother who is radiant and I think that speaks for itself".

He then drove mother and child to Amalienborg Palace, after strapping his small son safely into a baby carrier.

While the new arrival is her husband Joachim's third son, for Marie motherhood is all a very new experience
