It's not known whether the monarch is especially partial to that family staple, baked beans. But she now has plenty to sample after a visiting a canning factory to help mark its 50th anniversary.

The Queen and Prince Philip took home a wicker hamper filled with cans of tomato soup, sauces, organic baked beans and spaghetti hoops after touring the Heinz factory in Wigan.

She was also presented with a photograph of her late mother, who visited the factory in 1959, by its longest serving employee, 62-year-old Malcolm Hull.

"It’s a massive day for Heinz and Wigan," said Mr Hull, who's worked at the factory for 45 years. "Everybody has been looking forward to it for weeks."

The royal couple later moved on to the town of Leigh, in Greater Manchester, where they inaugurated an £83-million sports village.
