It's an adventure a daredevil like Prince Harry just couldn't resist. When disabled servicemen trek to the North Pole in April, next year, he has vowed to join them.
Speaking as he launched fundraising for the expedition of Walking with the Wounded, (pictured) a charity of which he is patron, Harry said, "You will be glad to know that if my military commitments allow me I would love to join the team."
Harry, 25, who is currently training to become a helicopter pilot with the Army Air Corps in Hampshire, added he would like to spend five days with them.
"I am absolutely thrilled to be patron of this wonderful expedition which exemplifies the tenacity and courage of those who serve our country. They are a huge example to us all. "What a wonderful inspiration they are to take on this massive challenge."
More than a 100 wounded servicemen volunteered to join the team, which has now been whittled down to just four amputees, two or three of whom will go with four expert arctic guides including Henry Cookson and Inge Solheim.
They will drag 100k sleds 300 miles across the frozen Arctic Ocean on foot in some of the most hostile conditions on earth including polar bears, hypothermia and frostbite.
Hoping he would be able to "keep up" with the wounded on their trek, Harry ended by saying, "Good luck, and let's get an Army flag on the North Pole before my brother lands a helicopter there. "Marine Matt Kingston, 25, one of the four finalists, lost his right foot in Afghanistan and said he suspects the main problem they will face is the bitter cold down to minus 45 degrees.
"It's a once in a lifetime opportunity which I don’t want to miss. I am worried about frostbite on my stump but it's great Harry is joining us. He's a good guy."
