Monaco royal wedding: Queens, kings and dukes congratulate the newlyweds

July 2, 2011

Just over a year ago came the first hint that Prince Albert of Monaco had finally found the woman with whom he wished to build a life.He asked for a special dispensation to take Charlene Wittstock, as she was then, to the wedding of Princess Victoria of Sweden (pictured below) and Prince Daniel.

In the minds of the Swedish royal family, memories of their own happy day will be inextricably linked with Friday's majestic service in Monte Carlo's royal palace. They attended in force looking thrilled, led by King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia. Crown Prince Frederik – who sits on the International Olympic Committee with Albert –  turned out to support his friend as well. Sport also brought him and his Australian wife together – he met Mary at the Sydney Games.

Meanwhile, Princess Maxima of the Netherlands waved in excitement as she arrived, escorted by her husband Prince Willem Alexander.Representing Britain were the Prince Edward and his wife Sophie who was showing off her svelte new figure in a form-fitting steel grey dress after losing a few pounds.

Also seated in the historic courtyard were the respective heirs to the Belgian and Norwegian thrones Philippe and Haakon with their wives Mathilde and Mette-Marit.
