Princess Mary of Denmark shows solidarity with Norway victims

July 28, 2011

Dressed sombrely in black, Princess Mary of Denmark pays her respects to the victims of the island and bomb massacre that shook neighbouring Norway at the weekend. She joined her husband Crown Prince Frederik and mother-in-law Queen Margrethe, the reigning monarch, at a service of remembrance in Copenhagen on Wednesday.

During the service at Vor Frue Kirk – the Church of Our Lady – Mary was seen wiping away tears and taking Frederik's hand for comfort. Like so many, the Danish royal family know people personally affected by the tragedy. They are close to their Norwegian counterparts, who have led the mourning. King Harald and Queen Sonja could hardly contain their emotions when they appeared in public.

The stepbrother of their daughter-in-law Mette-Marit was one of 76 people killed by right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik. Trond Berntsen, 51, an off-duty policeman and the son of the princess's late stepfather, died while working as a security guard on the island of Utoya. He attempted to challenge the gunman as he rampaged through the Labour Party youth camp.
