The jet-setting duo recently accepted an invitation from Bhutan's 27-year-old monarch, King Jigme Kesar Namgyal Wangchuck. Upon their arrival, they received a warm reception from officials at the kingdom's sole airport. Subsequently, the husband-and-wife team attended a grand reception in their honor, hosted by the Oxford-educated king at his official residence, Dechenchoeling Palace.

Bhutan, nestled between India and China in the Himalayan range, boasts a diverse landscape that stretches from icy peaks in the north to subtropical plains in the south. As one of the world's most secluded nations, its remoteness has been instrumental in preserving its rich cultural heritage. During their stay, Willem and Maxima delved into the country's spiritual heritage by visiting one of its 2,000 monasteries. They also explored a traditional medicine institute and engaged with local youth.

Known as the Land of the Thunder Dragon, Bhutan is a haven for trekkers and nature enthusiasts, offering vast forests and a habitat for rare flora and fauna. The capital city, with its unique charm, adds to the allure. Adhering to strict planning regulations, all city buildings showcase traditional architectural designs. The capital is also renowned for its vibrant festivals, including a popular masked-dance festival that marks the end of summer, drawing crowds with its colorful and lively celebrations.
