High fives and flip flops: The Obamas' festive trip to Hawaii

December 29, 2011

Barack Obama took some time out from his festive trip to Hawaii to visit servicemen and their families. And one youngster seemed thrilled by the President's visit as he scrambled up onto a seat to high five the world's most powerful man. The new friendship was forged as the US leader, who grew up on the island state, visited Hawaii's Marine Corps Base on Christmas Day.Barack was there with wife Michelle and they both chatted animatedly to soldiers and their partners, bounced toddlers and cradled a newborn who left the First Lady looking decidedly broody.

After the visit, the couple enjoyed some down time with daughters Sasha and Malia. The flip-flop clad President looked relaxed as he strolled in the balmy afternoon hand in hand with his two girls. Surrounded by tight security, the first family visited Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, Sea Life Park and also enjoyed a spot of snorkelling before retiring to their $3,500 a-day fortress in Kailua.

Barack's homecoming trip to the place where he was raised by his grandmother has received criticism for its cost. The $4 million bill is largely being picked up by the US taxpayer, although the Obamas are thought to be paying for their own accommodation.
