The Spanish crown has released details of senior royals' earnings for the first time since 1979. The dossier revealed that King Juan Carlos earns € 292,752 per year, whilst his son and heir, Crown Prince Felipe, receives around half that, a sum of €146,375. The figures given reflect the personal salary members of the royal family and are subject to normal tax rules.
The unprecedented move comes as the Spanish royal family look to project an image of transparency after the King's son-in-law, Iñaki Urdangarin, was investigated for corruption charges. Iñaki, who is married to the King's daughter Cristina, is the target of suspicion surrounding his business activities in Palma, Majorca. The accusations centre around the Noos Institute, a non profit organisation for the promotion of sports and tourism. As president, he is alleged to have charged local authorities hugely inflated fees for organising events and siphoning off funds to his private companies.
On Thursday the Duke of Palma - as he is known since his 1997 wedding - was summoned to appear before a judge so that the case can be settled in court.
The trial will begin on February 6 next year.
In light of the revelations, the beleaguered royal was removed from all public duties.
