Puppy love for the Duchess while William goes to Falklands

February 2, 2012

St James’s Palace has apparently refused to reveal the name of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's new dog. William and Kate welcomed the puppy about two months ago, and keep him in their rented farmhouse in North Wales. A spokesman said: “He is a private pet and they do not want his name to be made public although the couple are happy to confirm that they do, indeed, have a new dog.

The new addition to the family is thought to be a three-month old male cocker spaniel. Royal sources say the black pup comes from a litter bred by Kate's mother Carole Middleton, who loves dogs. William is also an animal lover. His black labrador Widgeon died about two years ago. For generations, dogs have been the Royal Family’s favourite pets and have enjoyed a high status.

When Queen Victoria’s Collie died in 1887 it was buried in Balmoral with its own gravestone. And when King Edward VII's terrier outlived him, he was permitted to walk behind His Majesty’s coffin in the funeral procession. No photos have been released of the couple and their new dog yet, but they have been spotted walking it on the beach near their house. The puppy will keep Kate company while William is away in the Falkland Islands on search and rescue duty.
