She let slip about her husband's romantic gesture as she carried out a day of engagements. And though she stepped out solo, the glossy brunette certainly wasn't short on affection on the most romantic day of the year.

On her second leg of visits for the day, Kate was greeted with a 300-strong crowd of excited well-wishers. She was presented with bouquets of blooms, makeshift cards and showered with hugs and affection.

The 30-year-old royal was arriving to meet some of the young patients at Alder Hey Children's hospital. She toured the oncology unit, where she shared a secret with 12-year-old Elliot Casey, who had just undergone an operation for a brain tumour. Kate whispered the name of her and William's cocker spaniel puppy in his ear, telling him not to tell anyone and the youngster stuck to his word. His mother Lisa, was highly impressed with Kate's easy manner. "She had a really nice way about her," she said. "She could talk to children. "To get that instant rapport with children is a special gift. I think she'll be good at her job."
