Last year, Samantha Cameron invited Michelle Obama to her ultra-modern kitchen in Downing Street for a cup of tea. So the US first lady was happy to extend her hospitality when her friend visited Washington DC this week. Sporty Michelle partnered her elegant British counterpart at an Olympic themed event held at the city's American University.
The two chatted and joked as athletes and children powered around them on the basketball court. Despite the active theme of the day, the polished ladies stood out with their bright colours and fashion forward attire. Samantha was recycling a favourite fuchsia top by Roksanda Illinc – the same one she wore with a pink and turquoise skirt to host a London Fashion Week reception in Number 10.This time, it was paired with slimline Joseph trousers and high heeled LK Bennett courts. Meanwhile, Michelle opted for a sunny yellow cardigan and wide-leg white trousers, both courtesy of L'Wren Scott. Their Olympic themed photo call served as a promotion for London's hosting of the Games this summer.
Michelle also used it as an opportunity to get local children involved in her Lets Move campaign – with the first lady scoring some points on the tennis court herself.
The two friends were back in each other's company on the first day of David Cameron's state visit to the US.
While the women caught up, their husbands were also bonding over a game of basketball game and tucking into hot dogs. On Wednesday evening, they were due to join their wives at black tie dinner.
