With her chestnut locks cut into a fringe and a bright smile, the model-turned-singer was clearly determined to show her support. Despite the sleepless nights involved in looking after their baby daughter Giulia, Carla has insisted on being at her husband's side. According to reports in the French press, the president has been worried about the stress on his wife – who has apparently been unnerved by the brutality of the campaign battle. "I told her to rest, but she does not want to stop," the French leader is said to have admitted.

In turn, the chatelaine of the Elysee Palace has expressed concern about his "20-hour working days" and "unimaginable sense of duty". Whatever the outcome of the poll, it's unlikely to affect their bond – as she put it shortly after their surprise marriage: "I’m the First Lady of France until the end of my husband’s term, and then his wife until death."
