Fit for a future king: William and Kate spend anniversary in The Crown country pub

May 4, 2012

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge surprised staff at a country pub at the weekend, as they celebrated their first wedding anniversary. The young royals booked into The Crown in Westleton, Suffolk, in the early hours of Sunday morning after attending the marriage of Hannah Gillingham, one of Kate’s best friends from school. They arrived at the historic 12th-century hotel at around 1am, and joined other wedding guests for a glass of champagne in the bar before heading up to their £165-a-night room.

William and Kate stayed in the Swan Room, which has a supersize four-poster bed with Egyptian cotton sheets and an en-suite bathroom which features a "stylish roll-top bath big enough for two", according to the website.

The following morning, they joined their friends for a leisurely breakfast in the pub’s garden room before leaving at around midday.

It's thought they then returned to their remote Anglesey home, where they enjoyed a romantic dinner for two.

All 34-rooms at The Crown were hired out for guests at Miss Gillingham’s wedding to Robert Carter, which took place 20 miles away in Wingfield.

Kate’s younger sister Pippa also stayed at one of the pub’s mid-range rooms, costing £145.

Saying that the royals had tried to act as normal as possible, he added: "They both ate a cooked breakfast of bacon and eggs before they left in the morning. "They’re the first royalty we’ve had staying with us. It’s not every day you welcome the second-in-line to the throne."

General manager Gareth Clarke said: "We were made aware that some special guests were arriving but we didn’t know just how special. "It was a lovely family occasion with a relaxed atmosphere and they both seemed really happy to be in a comfortable environment with friends.

According to members of staff, the Duke and Duchess were polite and friendly, and asked to be "treated like everyone else" when they arrived on Sunday.
