Swedish royals lead the celebrations on national day

June 7, 2012

As Britain’s four-day Diamond Jubilee extravaganza wound down, it was Sweden's turn to celebrate. Events took place up and down the country as the country marked its national day on Wednesday. And in Stockholm the sun shone down on the excited revellers who were hoping to catch a glimpse of the royals.

The day was a busy one for the royal family. Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine were on hand at 10am to open the doors of the royal palace in central Stockholm while King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia spent the morning in the medieval city of Visby. The royals then gathered in Stockholm for a horse-drawn procession from the palace to the open air museum Skansen.

Dressed in Swedish folkdraft – the traditional flower-embroidered pinafore worn over a white blouse – Madeleine, Crown Princess Victoria and Silvia posed before a dinner reception at the Royal Palace. They were joined by Carl Philip, Prince Daniel and King Carl XVI Gustaf, who looked smart in black suits.
