Princess Mary lets her fun side run wild on Greenland visit

June 8, 2012

Racing across the dramatic landscapes of Greenland with a group of kids, Princess Mary of Denmark is having the time of her life as she connects with her inner child. Despite the atmosphere of fun captured in the image, the royal was on the island – which falls under Danish rule – for a serious cause. The brunette was working on behalf of her charity, The Mary Foundation, which she established in 2007 to promote diversity and help the socially isolated.

Her organisation had joined forces with Save the Children and the LEGO Foundation in a drive to stop bullying in classrooms. During the visit, Frederik's wife also visited various schools and met with local children and teachers. As a mother of four, children's welfare is a cause close to the princess' heart, and she has spent many years cultivating harmonious relationships in classrooms.

In May, she organised a relay race for 335 children in Arhus, Denmark. The run represented the importance of children supporting and caring for one another. "The baton race is an important part of 'Free of Bullying Project', and this day is to support each other and show that you are good mates," she explained to the young participants and their parents.

When the Mary Foundation was established, its glamorous patron was unequivocal about her expectations, both for children and in wider society. "I strongly believe that every individual has the right to belong to a community and to know that there are people who understand them and are concerned for their wellbeing. And this belief is the basis for The Mary Foundation," she said.
