The 'Kate effect' boosts donations to William and Harry's charity

July 18, 2012

When the Duchess of Cambridge wears a particular dress or coat, it sells out in a matter of hours. But The 'Kate effect' doesn't just apply to changing the fortunes of fashion houses.Kate's association with Prince William and Harry's charitable foundation has increased donations by almost ten fold.

Official figures show the organisation raised an impressive £4.8 million in 2011, compared with £629,000 in 2010, before the Duke and Duchess announced their engagement. William – with the support of his brother– has taken a significant step to ensure his wife's contribution has been recognised.

The pair have changed the name of their joint foundation to include Kate's name in the title. Official documents reveal that the Foundation Of Prince William And Prince Harry is now to be known as The Royal Foundation Of The Duke And Duchess Of Cambridge And Prince Harry. The new name now appears on the charity's website, which also features a picture of the Duchess with her husband and his brother.

It is thought the change was approved at a meeting last week. Kate was made joint patron of the foundation last October, but at the time officials said there were no plans to change the name.

It was her first official charity role, intended to smooth her transition into the world of royal philanthropy following her wedding. Harry and William were joint founders of the organisation, which was set up in 2009 to raise funds for their favourite causes.
