Plain sailing for Kate with Ben Ainslie in Weymouth

August 7, 2012

As Team GB consolidated its position in the medal table, the Duchess of Cambridge braved the wind to get on board with the the efforts of British sailors in Weymouth.

Kate watched as the stellar crew – including the UK's most decorated sailor Ben Ainslie – took part in the Laser Radial medal race off.

During the day's competition on Monday Irish sailor Annalise Murphy narrowly missing out on a medal after finishing fourth. The Duchess was accompanied by Sir Steve Redgrave, Princess Anne and her husband Vice Admiral Timothy Laurence who all watched the action unfold from a boat nearby. At one point sporty Kate used binoculars to get a better look at what was happening out at sea.

Once on dry land, the athletes had a chance to chat with their royal visitor. Having won a gold medal the day before, Ben was still feeling the after effects of his efforts. Speaking of his meeting with the Duchess he said: "I don't think my small talk was great. I'm walking around like a zombie at the moment". But Kate seemed to enjoy his company and the pair were seen haring a joke together. For the day out on the South coast, the brunette wrapped up against the elements in Team GB's official kit. A pair of fashion-forward red trainers and chic £145 Givenchy sunglasses completed the look.
