Mike Tindall suggests he and Zara could be an Olympic dream team

August 28, 2012

Rugby star Mike Tindall seems to have been inspired by his Olympic medal-winning wife Zara Phillips and has expressed interest in the couple both joining Team GB for Rio 2016.The 33-year-old, from Otley, West Yorkshire, cheered on his wife as she won an eventing silver medal on the couples' wedding anniversary.

In an interview in this week's HELLO! the former England player suggests that he would like a role in the next Olympics, which take place in the Brazilian capital, saying: "I'd love to go to Rio as I've never been and I note rugby sevens will be included." He then alluded to a husband-and-wife dream team by adding: "I know Rio is in her plans. Maybe Zara can compete in the eventing and I in the rugby. "However Mike, who was awarded an MBE for his part in England's Rugby World Cup winning squad in 2003, is aware time may be running out for him: "Mind you, I'll be 37. I wonder if England would take me as a fat prop forward?" he adds. The royal couple are rightly proud of their sporting achievements. "That Olympic silver, in my book, is right up there with my World Cup medal, if not above it, because it was won at the London Games with so much expectation and pressure," says Mike.

He adds: "When England won the World Cup we were favourites to do so. Team GB’s eventing silver wasn’t expected, so to produce that collective performance was outstanding."

On Monday, Zara took part in the Wellington Horse Trials in Hampshire, her first competition since the Games. Looking relaxed and enjoying the sunshine, she was greeted by children, who surrounded her horse, Black Tuxedo.Meanwhile former England captain Mike, has recently been appointed as a player-coach with premiership side Gloucester, not far from the Cheltenham home the couple share. For the full interview with Mike pick up this week's HELLO!, on sale now.
