Rare date night for William and Kate after his sad day alone

October 11, 2012

After a difficult and sad day alone, there was only on place Prince William wanted to be – back in the arms of his beloved wife.So after a busy day of engagements in the North East, the Duchess of Cambridge rushed down to London to be at her husband's side.

The future King had said goodbye to his beloved nanny Olga Powell, attending her funeral in Harlow, Essex. So to try and lift his spirits, the couple went out for a date at Mayfair's private member's club Loulou's. The pair are hardly ever seen out together other than at work events these days, but Wednesday night was an exception. Kate wore a black dress with matching coat and heels and carried a clutch bag, while William stepped out in a suit. He had earlier joined around 100 mourners – including his late mum's sisters Lady Sarah McCorquodal and Lady Jane Fellowes – for a 30-minute service.

The Mary Poppins song Let's go Fly a Kite was played as a tribute to Olga's days as a nanny – she had looked after William since he was six years old. While William paid his respects, Kate was left in charge of official duties. And she was a resounding success in the North, where she met some adorable youngsters. After a hug with an excited ten-year-old, Kate was highly amused to make the acquaintance of little Lola Mackay, a two-year-old who didn't want to part with her bunch of flowers. The 30-year-old, who wore a red Whistles dress and the same coat which she chose for Sandringham on Christmas Day, was particularly taken with four-day old baby Lee Turner, whom she met in Elswick. "He's very dinky," she told his aunt Kymberlie Davis while gazing into the little one's eyes. While at a community garden in the area, Kate revealed she grows her own vegetables. Pat Fisher, who spoke to the Duchess, recounted: "She said she grew potatoes but they were not as big as the ones we've got here. "She also planted a clove of garlic. She was quite surprised that a bulb came out of that."
