Around 10:30 on Friday morning President Obama was informed of the fatal occurrence that saw twenty-year-old Adam Lanza turn up to three firearms on his victims, who include 20 children aged six and seven, teachers at the school and his own mother. The attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the country's North Eastern state prompted Mr Obama to release a televised statement to the nation on Saturday  in which he said "as a country we have been through this too many times. We're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics."

These comments have encouraged activists to believe some legislative action will be taken on the country's law surrounding guns as a result of the tragedy especially as the Hawaii-born leader added "I will do everything in my power as President to help. "Obama, who is father to two daughters, Sasha and Malia, also struggled to hide his emotion during the speech as he spoke of the "beautiful little kids" who died. Whilst the President heads to Newtown, Connecticut, House Speaker John A. Boehner announced that the Republican party would not issue their usual radio address to allow Obama to "speak for the entire nation at this time of mourning."
