Prince Charles congratulated at polo event

Prince Charles, who became a first-time grandfather following the birth of Kate Middleton and Prince William’s son Prince George, was surrounded by well-wishers when he took to the field at a polo match on Sunday.

The royal surprised fellow spectators at the Audi International Polo event when he walked onto the field to join in the tradition of stamping down the divots made by horses during the match.

Prince Charles had been watching the match from the Royal Pavillion at Guards Polo Club in Windsor Great Park, but decided to step over the roped off area in front of the pavilion and walk on to the field.

He was quickly surrounded by spectators, many of whom shook his hand and offered their congratulations on his grandson.

"I think everyone here is thrilled, they are great supporters of him and the family," said David Wood, the chief executive of the Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA).

Prince Charles, William and Harry have all played at the Guards Polo Club.David added that he hopes Prince George will be a polo player when he grows up. "I’m sure he will be," he said.

The Audi International Polo event welcomed a host of famous faces including Billie Piper, David Gandy, Laura Whitmore, Tuppance Middleton and Julien MacDonald, who all headed to the VIP afterparty in the Boujis marquee.

It was the first time that Boujis, the London nightclub that has been frequented by both Prince William and Prince Harry, has hosted the afterparty.

DJs Groove Armada and Pete Tong entertained guests, with designer Julien MacDonald jumping up on stage during the Groove Armada set. Laura Whitmore and David Gandy were both spotted up on the dancefloor.

Guests sipped on Moet & Chandon champagne, Belvedere vodka, Asahi bers, Redbull, Jax Coco and Boujis’ famous vodka and champagne Crackbaby shots.
