Harry, who is part of Team Glenfiddich, will deliver a short speech and pick up last-minute provisions for the race.

The prince will collect the South Pole Flag and unveil the much-coveted trophy that his team and two others — Team US and the Commonwealth Team — will race across the Antarctic for.

The Wire's Dominic West will form part of the Commonwealth Team, while True Blood star Alexander Skarsgård will race for Team US.

Harry, who has been vigorously training in the lead-up to the gruelling 200mile race, will test his fitness and determination levels to the maximum. The trek will be even more difficult for some of the other team members, the majority of who have suffered physical or mental injuries in the line of duty.Facing strong winds and temperatures as low as -45°C, the groups will trek for around 10 miles per day while pulling heavy sledges.

The charity trek is expected to last around 15 days, with the teams setting off on 1 December and hoping to cross the finish line by 16 December.

As patron of the expedition, this year's challenge won't be the first time Harry has taken part in a Walking With The Wounded trek. He went to the North Pole in 2011 for five days and was also patron of the Everest Expedition in 2012.

The three teams will fly to Cape Town, South Africa, on 16 November before flying to Novo, Antarctica, where they will spend a few days checking kit and acclimatising. They will then be flown 87°C south to begin the race.
