Guests have been told to be prepared to dance though, and to eat before they come. "There's one thing I can tell you for sure… people will move, said Valerie Jarrett, a senior White House adviser.

While it hasn't been confirmed, it is thought that Beyonce has been asked to sing at the party. The superstar singer, a close friend of the Obama family, famously serenaded Barack and Michelle at an inauguration ball in 2009, and performed the national anthem at the president's second swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol last year.

"I've got to keep figuring out ways to have an impact, whether as a mother or as a professional or as a mentor to other kids," Michelle said, noting that daughter Malia, 15, will be in college when the family leave the White House in January 2017.
