Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton, indulged in a tipple as they rounded off their trip to Scotland. The royal couple were visiting The Famous Grouse Distillery on Thursday afternoon when they were offered, and gladly accepted, a dram of whisky. Kate, 32, opted for the Snow Goose, which was described as having a lighter flavour and being "more for the ladies" by master blender Gordon Motion.

After the Duchess took a sip, she commented that the drink was "very nice" before offering the glass to her husband. "What was that one?" asked William, who had tried some of the Alpha Black. "The snow... the girly one," laughed Kate, to which her husband smiled and said, "No, you drink it." Royal watchers had been wondering when the parents of ten-month-old Prince George would be adding to their brood, but it looked like Kate, who is known for being a moderate drinker, quashed pregnancy rumours as she took part in the whisky tasting.

The royal couple were also given a tour of the Perthshire distillery by general manager Stuart Cassells where they learnt about Scotland's national drink. William tried his hand at hammering the cork into a bottle of Glenturret Single Malt whisky. The Duke and Duchess, who are known as The Earl and Countess of Strathearn north of the border, then bottled their own malt as a little keepsake to take home.

"With such strong links to this area through their Scottish titles, we couldn't think of anyone more perfectly placed to open our new-look visitor areas," said Stuart. "All the staff here at the experience won't be forgetting this day anytime soon." After their visit, William and Kate finished off their busy day of engagements with a visit to the village of Forteviot. Based in the foothills of the Highlands, it was once the capital of Scotland and is now the site of an archaeological dig.
