The proud father was also inundated with birthday gifts for George, including a handmade card and a plaque spelling his name in scrabble letters. He was also presented with a turquoise and black "loom band" - the latest craze among schoolchildren. In a pre-released message for the visit to launch the Centenary Fields Project, which aims to protect green spaces around the country by building war memorials, William revealed that being a father has made him value green spaces for the freedom they give children.

He wrote: "As someone who has always enjoyed sport, and now as a new father, I appreciate the importance of allowing our children the freedom to experience outdoor space. "And not just children - adults benefit just as much, for a stroll, to walk the dog, to exercise or just to get some fresh air. "Outdoor space is more than a nice-to-have for every community - it is an inalienable part of living well."
