Queen Letizia poses for selfie after cinema date with husband Felipe

July 23, 2014

When planning a trip to the cinema, you don't expect to get the chance to take a selfie with the queen during your evening out.

But that's exactly what happened for two excited film fans in Madrid at the weekend, when they found themselves watching the same movie as Queen Letizia and King Felipe of Spain.

The royal couple stopped by Madrid's Kinepolis cinema to watch the new blockbuster Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. When Letizia happily posed for a snap, their date night went viral.

In the picture Letizia, dressed down in casual clothes, puts her arm around the shoulders of an excited fan, while the girl's friend is in charge of taking the selfie. The two youngsters described the newly crowned queen as "very friendly", and apparently talked with her for some time.

It's not the first time Letizia has posed for photographs with members of the public. Just last month, the royal couple were hailed as incredibly modern monarchs after several selfie snaps of them got people talking.

It's been a marked difference from the path followed by King Juan Carlos and his wife Queen Sofia, who were very much of a traditional generation. Weeks before the abdication the Royal House launched a Twitter account. With over 145,000 followers, the account is updated regularly and shows the Spanish public and their fans how open Felipe and Letizia are to meeting the public.

The daily updates also provide transparency and an openness that was previously missing from the monarchy.
