Princess Mary supports gender equality at UN conference

Princess Mary attended a United Nations conference in Geneva on Thursday. The Danish royal spoke at a meeting for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women and Girls for Sustainable Development in the Economic Commission for Europe region, which was being held to mark the 20th anniversary of Beijing+20, a women's conference in China.The Australia-born princess listened intently as the conference discussed issues such as poverty, inequality in the work place and SRHR–sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Mother-of-four Mary has long been involved with the UN and is a patron of its population fund UNFPA. The 42-year-old is also involved the Danish Refugee Council, the World Health Organisation's Regional Office for Europe and is a member of the High-Level Task Force for the International Conference on Population and Development.

The Danish princess showed her support for Gender Equality

Mary's appearance in Switzerland came just one day after she met with victims of sexual crimes in South Africa. For four days, the princess toured the African country, notably visiting a care centre in Soweto which was set up as part of South Africa's anti-rape strategy.

The royal spent time talking to staff and patients at The Nthabiseng Thuthuzela Care Centre at Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital, which is a one-stop facility offering care and support to Soweto's many victims of sexual violence.

Mary also worked to promote SRHR by attending a network reception at the Danish ambassador's residence with representatives from NGOs and a civil society dedicated to the SRHR agenda.
