The Countess of Wessex has spoken about her relationship with the Queen in an exclusive interview ahead of her 50th birthday in January. Speaking to Harper's Bazaar in her first interview since 2001, Sophie spoke candidly about the life lessons she has learnt from her mother-in-law since she married Prince Edward in 1999."The Queen would never let anybody down, and that means that you feel the same way. Because there's that part of her which I'm sure is like the proverbial stick of rock… the word 'service' just runs through her" she said.

Sophie said that the Queen has also taught her that it does not matter how tired you are, you must always carry on. "In the early days, I used to rush around as quickly as I could, but when you observe the Queen, she does things in such a measured way, and I hope I've learnt to try not to bounce into the room, but do things in a slightly more elegant way," she revealed.The Queen has also taught Sophie about the "art of talking meaningfully".Sophie said: "It's hard to make people feel that the conversation you've had with them was worthwhile, but the Queen is very good at that."

The Countess, who celebrates her 50th birthday on 20 January, has often been described as "the Queen's favourite" as the two share a passion for horses and military history.The pair are said to have "long and meaningful talks" together, so it is no wonder Sophie has learnt so much from her mother-in-law.Sophie also defended the fashion industry against those who might be "slightly dismissive of it. "The mother-of-two, who has been praised for her style, described it as a "huge bonus to our economy that is often underestimated."
