William and Kate's Princess shares birthday with David Beckham and other celebs

Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton, welcomed their new Princess on 2 May, giving the nation's royal followers another baby to adore. Prince George's little sister was born at 8:34 am in the exclusive Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital, London, weighing 8lbs 3oz.

"The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales & The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry & members of both families have been informed," Kensington Palace announced on Twitter. "Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well. "While the news travels accross the globe, a few celebrities will no doubt be tickled that they now share their birthday with the new bundle of royal joy. And how fitting that one of them is David Beckham, who turned 40 on Saturday.

David, who is currently celebrating his milestone birthday in Marrakech, has long been a friend of the Cambridges. He and William have teamed up on wildlife campaigns in the past, and the football legend attended William and Kate's wedding in 2011.

Ahead of the arrival of the new Princess, the dad-of-four offered advice to his friends, saying they should "get some more sleep before this little one arrives". Speaking at Victoria's New York Fashion Week show in September, he also praised the royal couple's parenting skills.

"Obviously William I've known known for quite a few years, and William is such a great person, such a great dad," said David. "Catherine is exactly the same. She's a great mum and obviously with the commitments that they have, to be a great mum and dad is pretty incredible."

Apart from David's, 2 May boasts a long roster of recognisable birthdays, everyone from acclaimed musicians to up-and-coming comedians. In addition, May 2 was also a birthday for a historic royal figure: Catherine the Great. The empress was the most renowned and longest-ruling female leader of Russia, from 1729 to 1796.There were other big markers for this day, from great (Tennessee Williams won the Pulitzer for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) to ghastly (Anne Boleyn was arrested and taken to the Tower of London).Perhaps most notably, in 1945, the Soviet Union announced the fall of Berlin and the Allies announced the surrender of Nazi troops in Italy.
